Since the United States acquired Alaska from Russia in 1867, the U.S. military has maintained a strong presence in the upper territory. In the beginning, it was responsible for governing Alaska until it became a district in 1884. Today, the Alaskan Command provides security and assistance to the residents and state of Alaska.

On January 3, 1959, Alaska was admitted into statehood becoming the 49th state in the United States. The Alaskan Command, made up of Eleventh Air Force, the U.S. Army Alaska, and U.S. Naval Forces Alaska, is responsible for operations in and around the State of Alaska. Between the U.S. Air Force, U.S. Army, and U.S. Coast Guard, there are seven bases in Alaska. The creation of military bases in Alaska greatly contributed to the growth of many of Alaskan cities.
